mysqldump problem - need help

hi everyone, i hope you can help me out. whenever i try to use mysqldump in the shell i get this problem:

bash-2.04$ mysqldump db > outfile.txt
mysqldump: Got error: 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '
/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) when trying to connect

anyone know what is wrong? do i need to add options?

any help would be appreciated.

You need to connect to the DB first, try
mysql -u your_username -pyour_password
at the command prompt. Then do your dump.

the way i understood it, this was a shell function and not a mysql one... i have tried connecting to mysql and doing mysqldump at the prompt with no luck (it gives me syntax errors)
