Selecting fields

How do I get mysql to select the fields in a db so that I can do a query with that?

i am using mysql database on linux

also i am using cgi scripts,front end is html

when the database table size is more than 10,000 records it is taking lot lot of time i
approximately 8 to 9 minutes how can i redsuce the response time to say some seconds
