Returning value from Oracle

I have the following code:

$hours_result = OCIParse($db,"SELECT SUM(TIME) FROM history WHERE projectid='123'");
OCIExecute($hours_result);
OCIFetchStatement($hours_result,$total_hours);

I am just trying to get the resultant number from the SQL statement. I am not sure that OCIFetchStatement is the right thing to use or if OCIFetch($hours_result) is in this case. Additionally, I've tried several combinations and methods for retrieving the reults such as
OCIResult($hours_result,"TIME") - used with OCIFetch
and
$total_hours["TIME"][0] - for use with OCIFetchStatement
And various others as a lark to see if I could stumble into the answer but no luck.
The examples of how I return listed above work fine for all my other SQL statements that do not use aggregate SQL functions. Any ideas?

Nevermind, I figured it out:

you use:
OCIFetchInto($hours_result,$total_hours);
instead of OCIFetchStatement() or OCIFetch()

and you get the data out by using:
$total_hours[0];

try the following code from the manual, change the $results varaible with your $hours_result variable. Also it may help if you use aliases with column names that use functions (SELECT SUM(TIME) as total_hours FROM history WHERE projectid='123':
