random results from field ?

hey all, if i had a db with some fields in it, and say it had X number of entries and i wanted to get a random result from a specific field of entry X what would i need to do ?

or is it better to approach it more like i want to get the field from random enrty X ?

Which method to use depends very much on which database type you are using.

One fail-safe method is to simply select all primary-key values from the table, pick a random value using PHP, and run a query to fetch the row that has that PK value.
