error when inserting a new field in tabl

When I try to insert a new column field in mysql, I want it to be of type "text" or "blob" but when I do it inside phpadmin, it gives me this error, it has to do with the "length/set" field. Can you tell me what to put in it. Here is my error:

ALTER TABLE menagerie.pet CHANGE pictures pictures TEXT (20) not null
MySQL said: You have an error in your SQL syntax near '(20) not null ' at line 1

Try this:
mysql> use menagerie;
mysql> ALTER TABLE pet CHANGE pictures pictures TEXT(20) not NULL;

This should work.

actually, that did not work either. It tells me I have an error 1064. I tried using the command interface and the phpadmin interface, but both give me an error. What is that error 1064.
