OS X Apache MySQL Can't access DB

I'm running the a OS X and I'm getting the error

<b>MySQL Error</b>: 1044 (Access denied for user: '@' to database 'matrix')<br>
Session halted.

I get this about 50% of the time, including often when I first return to
the site.

What could be the problem?

Is it trying to tell me <blank> is the username
(i.e. in the quotes before the @)?
Because the code I have uses a special 'reader' user.

PHP Version 4.1.2
Apache 1.3.23

I just starting on this PHP stuff I hope someone can help.

Hello Self,

The problem went away when we upgraded the MySQL on the Apple OS X box to the latest version available for that machine as of 5/1/2002.
