The real question is did the index solve a problem for you (ie access times). If it helps, who cares about the disk space.
Database optimization is as much art as science, and things like indexing need to be reviewed as the scale of your data changes. What database are you using? You can usually find some technical information about specific databases and how to best optimize them.
