drop field in postgres

I want to drop a field(birthdate) in my postgres.
MySQL : ALTER TABLE user DROP birthdate;
PGSQL : ???
Please help.

From the PG docs:

Currently, to remove an existing column the table must be recreated and reloaded:

CREATE TABLE temp AS SELECT did, city FROM distributors;

DROP TABLE distributors;
CREATE TABLE distributors (
did DECIMAL(3) DEFAULT 1,
name VARCHAR(40) NOT NULL
);
INSERT INTO distributors SELECT * FROM temp;
DROP TABLE temp;

Potentially quicker way...

create table temp_user as select col_1, col_2, col_3,......(all except birthdate) from user;

drop table user;

alter table temp_user rename to user;
