database names using postgres

When I issue the following commad:

createdb lemon

a directory gets created in /var/lib/pgsql/data/base called 18735 instead of lemon.

I want /var/lib/pgsql/data/base/lemon
I get /var/lib/pgsql/data/base/18735

How can I get this to happen? Thank you for any help.

The only way to get that to happen is to go back to version 6.5.x. the change was made in the great migration from 6.5.x to 7.x and will probably never change back.

There is a little program in the postgresql-7.x.x/contrib/oid2name directory you can do a 'make install' on and then use that to get an oid to name listing...

I don't think there is any easy way to do what you ask. Why is it you need to? If you need to put it on another partition, I believe postgres has commands that can create data areas in non-standard locations.

You should never have to touch any of the files in those directories yourself, all management of them should be done through the postgres utilities, including backup, using pg_dump.
