cant get mod_auth_mysql to work

apache 1.3.14
php 4.0.4pl
mod_auth_mysql 1.1
mysql (current stable version)

cant get mod_auth_mysql to work. it asks for the login, but i guess its not connecting or something, because it kills me every time. Ive checked and triple checked all my parameters (spelling, etc), tried using .htaccess files versus direct input into the httpd.conf files between <Directory> tags. tried inserting passwords clear text versus using PASSWORD(). nothing is working. HELP?

Are you using PHP's built-in MySQL support? You will need to recompile PHP with your own MySQL libraries to get this to work.
