database + Mac

Hi!

Does anybody know any databases for Mac? Can anybody tell me where to start PHP programming on Mac? Is it possible?

Hey Mihkel,

The easiest thing to do is use OS X. It comes with PHP 4 and Apache and versions of postgres and mysql are available for it.

Probably Not
-- OSX upgrade is not THAT expensive --
assuming that you have the hardware for it, I'd upgrade even if I didn't need mySQL or PostgreSQL -- it's much more reliable.

One thing that isn't mentioned so far is whether you are doing local development or using a server. You can write code on a mac using any text editor (BBEdit is the best). You can then FTP that script to any server account with PHP and MySQL and you're off an running. I did that for a long time on OS9. I have OSX now, but I still run my scripts off site.

I currently have a Mac laptop, PowerBook 5300c. It's not about the price. The point is, that MacOS x requires a G3 with at least 128kB RAM and 1.5GB free disk space. My 'book has enough RAM, but it lacks on disk space (it has total of about 770M😎. And I would like to use for local dev mainly, as I am travelling much.

hmmm. I think that has a 603e chip. I don't think you'll be running OSX on that! Maybe you should look into a used iBook. With the latest update to OSX (10.1.5) the old graphics set are better supported and you could run it on that. Besides, weren't the 5300's the one that spontaneously combusted? :-) You might need to look into a remote development environment.
