I have a table of awards received.
The awards have been recieved over several years.

the fiels are:
year received
award name
short description of award

i want to create a table of this information with the year received appearing only once as a header for each year. I don't want the heading repeated for each award listed.For instance, this is how i want it to come out...

2002 Awards
Good Guy Award
This was received....

Another Good Guy Award
This was received....

Yet Another Good Guy Award
This was received....

2001 Awards
Good Guy Award
This was received....

Another Good Guy Award
This was received....

Yet Another Good Guy Award
This was received....

Any ideas?

This isn't really a possibility in the actual table design. It is however a possibility for PL/SQL if you are using Oracle or PHP/SQL combo if you are using mysql.

I do a similar sort of thing with some hockey teams that I keep results for. The division that they play in is listed once and then all the results given below.

The code has a structure along the lines of:

$saved_name = '';
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result) )
{
if ( $row["team_desc"] !== $saved_name ) //i.e new team
{
echo $row["team_desc"] . "<br>\n";
$saved_name = $row["team_desc"] ;
}
echo <rest of details>
}

Another way to do it is in a loop (if you are using a programming language).

The basic structure would be

array1 = (the result of a select statement which returns a list of the unique years; ie: SELECT DISTINCT year FROM table ORDER BY year DESC/ASC)

Then loop through the array, selecting and outputting the related records on each itereation:

for each item in array1,
{
array2 = (the result of a select statement returning all records related to the current year from array1)
echo 'Awards for '.array1["year"];
for each item in array2
{
echo 'Info about each award from array2, not including the year';
}
}
