MS Access 2000 and long string fields

Good evening all. I am in desperate need of some wisdon!

I am creating a database for my job as a car salesperson (Chrylser & Jeep products in NY).

I have created notation fields of the standard max length of 255 bytes. When I attempt to add records or update records where to contents of the fields (entered from a form and used by queries) one of two situations happen.
1. The process runs but the queries do not actual update.
2. I get a violate of locked or invalid process.

Has anyone else run into this situation?? I am befuddled!

As an add on to the confusion I the version of access I am running (Access 2000) does not seem to accept the "Database" as a valid type!

Please let me know what I can do or attempt to do to resolve this challenge.

The violation of locking can be because of this: You have the table open in Access, or it is open by some other app in exclusive mode. If you try to modify data from the table, it will return an error.
