Underscores in field name

Has anyone experienced problems with retreiving data from MSSQL when a field name contains an underscore?

Here is the code...

...
$row = mssql_fetch_array($result);
$known_as = $row["known_as"];
...

$known_as doesn't return a value, but when using $known_as = $row[0] the value is returned. I know I can get around this using SQL, but is there another way of solving this problem?

I doubt it's the underscore. Any chance of upper vs lower case problems?

No, tried that. Still won't play.

I have used this and it works...

SELECT Known_as as 'knownas' FROM table

But I don't really want to have to change my SQL statements.

Sorry, you were right. In the database the case was 'Known_As' but using the following code I found that PHP named the field: 'Known_as'

$fld = mssql_fetch_field($result,0);
echo "|" . $fld->name . "|";

If you are using more than one database for developing or testing you should check them all really carefully. This looks more like a typo that could keep haunting you rather than something php did...

Also, MSSQL will return the column name as you typed it in the select statement, not as it's defined in the table (I know, it's ugly...).

These will all return the same rows on a case insensitive server, but they are different column names as far as php is concerned:

select Know_As ...
select know_as ...
select Know_as ...
SELECT KNOW_AS ...

Thanks for that. I think I will make sure that my select statements are all in lowercase if I can.

What do you think to PHP and MSSQL? Is it just as good as ASP?
