mysql data transfer

I am doing fault tolerance testing of a few major databases and need to know when data is transfered from the interface to the database or vice versa how is the data formated.

IE. does it send: <command><data as binary or hex or encrypted?>

100% textual to this question.
all future versions will be binary.
