ensure unique ids

Is there a way to ensure the the auto_increment will never repeat??

it won't - thats why its called "auto-increment"
it starts at 1 and keeps going......

Well I did a very simple test...... I create a table, inserted two records, (keys 1, 2 respectively) and then deleted the second on, added a new record and it was assigned the key of 2... I don't want it to reuse keys from deleted records!!

this is the version of mysql I have:

Ver 3.22.25 for pc-linux-gnu on i686

try to add about 5 records and then delete the second and add another and see what happens....

well it doesen't replace skipped id.. but.. it does replace the last id ... no good... 🙁

It depends on which table type you have.

ISAM or BDB will reuse a deleted maximum number, MyISAM or InnoDB will not.

Ahh...my version of mysql 3.22 doesn't support MyISAM ... thats why.
