Hello!

I have small community with 100-200 users.
There are not many funcion but there are a few like the ability to write in other users guestbook, send mail, etc.

Now to my problem.
I want to create a small application for windows that checks if a user have any new mails or guestbook entries. The problem is security. I dont want to use same password as my website since it has access to everything.

What is the best way to do this?

well presumnig your using MySQL to fetch the data 🙂 you can just limit the Query string to only retrieve 1 entry/field out of the required table.

i.e. in the users column add an extra field called 'mail' or something and put 1 of 2 values in it, yes or no.

yes for new mail and no for none.
then you can fetch that row from the mysql table and print result pending on whats in that row 'yes or no'.

i forgot to say that you should be able to post and read entries too.

that makes it more difficult.

Easiest way.

Build a database table with userid and some privilege columns or values (e.g. user_id, read_guestbook, write_guest etc)
When the user signs in, create a session for them and load the values from your user table into the session.
Have a menu that checks the session to see which menu options should be available.
Put a session check piece of code as the first bit in all pages that should only be used when the user has signed in.
