Oracle Request Time Outs

I have built PHP4.0.3pl1 with OCI8 into the latest apache. I can log into a remote oracle database, as the returned value from OCIPLogon is not false.

I then proceed to parse and execute then fetch a query, but my brower just hangs like its working, but nothing ever happens...

Anyone have this problem and perhaps solved it?

OK I finally got something to come out of the SQL, part of the problem is that the database is remote on a slow WAN.

How do I do a SELECT LIMIT CLAUSE the way I do in MySQL, thats the first thing I noticed different about ORACLE's SQL Implentation.

I have read the PHP documentation and find it absolutely non-informative.

P - creates a persistant logon, so does that mean I should never logoff when i am done?

If so how does the $connection (returned by OCI(X)Logon identifier get persisted from one instance to another since it is required to parse and execute queries.

How is OCILogon different from OCINlogon? If a logon doesn't persist is not always a new logon???? I am totally befuddled.

Further, my users will just be (reading) the oracle database, I don't need to bother with transactoins and all that rigamoral, what is the best login to use that won't keep causing the stupid ora-24327 (user isn't authenticated, attached or something like that)

Any help would be much appreciated.

From my experience with oracle and PHP, when a query times out like that its usualy an error in your SQL statement.

With oracle and php i found non persistant connections to be faster. Good practice is to not open your DB connection untill you need it and close it as soon as you are done. Also be sure to free any statements if you don't need them anymore.

As for ora-24327 I've never encountered it

No, same SQL statement that works, its just hit and miss(sometimes it works soemtimes it doesn't, especially during concurrent web access). If I wait long enough when it hangs (using OCIPlogin) I get an ORA-12545(cannot connect to database object). If I use the other logins I just get that ora-24327.
