Cant connect to MySQL!!

I have tried lots of different MySQL queries, but whenever I try to open a php page that tries to access the MySQL database, it says
"Warning: Cant connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in (php page) on line (whatever line that tries to connect to mysql)".
Am I supposed to use "localhost" for my local host? or do I use ODBC? I tried both, but it still doesnt work! anyone know why this wont work? my e-mail is [e-mail] if you wanna email me. thanks,

since you want to query and get results from mysql, why dont you first start the mysql server!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I am having the same problem. I have tried to start mysql but after the line "starting deamon" this line prints "deamon ended". Or something similiar to these statements.

It is like mysql is started but then automatically shuts itself down. What is going on?

It was working yesterday. I have an php authentication script that logins in users. It was working fine, but early this morning I tried to login and the error "Could not connect to database". Obviously this is my error message for when I cannot connect to mysql.

What should I try to do?

I know this will sound dumb, but to start mysql, do I just use the command prompt to start the mysql.exe, or what? And I would appreciate it if you didnt make me feel like a dumb you know what.

'./bin/safe_msqld &'

well, I connect to the MySQL monitor, and I go to the site that tries to access the database, and it still says that it cant connect to MySQL. For the host, do I put the server that hosts the php page, or do I just put localhost? I've tried both. I just cant get this to work.
