ODBC_pconnect open multiple connects

I'm not sure what's going but I'm running PHP 4.2.1, Apache on a Windows NT connecting to a Sybase DB through ODBC.

I have a simple database connection object that call the odbc_pconnect function. I'm watching my connetions on the database and everytime the call to the pconnect is made a completely NEW connection is made.

My understanding was that the pconnect was supposed to realize that a connection is already opened and re-use it. Am I incorrect?

On Apache/PHP, most persistant connections are opened on a per backend basis. i.e. each backend opens its own persistant connection, not to be shared with the other backends.

So, if your apache is limited to 100 children, then you could theoretically wind up with 100 or more persistant connections.

In general, unless you are running a TRULY loaded server (lotsa ram and lotsa users) it doesn't gain much to use persistant connects, but can easily cause problems.

Is there a way to stream line the standard connections. I think that my code is a little to fat but when a user loades my page I make about three to four database connections running different SQL. It seems to be taking longer and longer every time I add a new piece.

I've been stream lining my code and it needs a lot more work but I was wondering if there was to pool the connections?
