Connecting to MS-SQL using PHP4 on linux

I am having problems setting up PHP4 with sybase ase to run on linux and query a remote MS-SQL db on NT4.0

PHP isnt even recognizing the : mssql_connect() statement.... any suggestions

It's greatly appriciated....
