Mysql connection failed

Hi,
I'm unable to connect to Mysql database.
Can anyone help me out?.What is the possible cause of this error?.

Unable to connect how? Via a shell prompt? php? is the process running?

I\\\\'m tried in DOS prompt and also in my php file(opening db connection and retrieve table records).In both ways,I\\\\'m unable to open connection to Mysql database.
Do I need to change in the .php file?.
Can you please help me out.

What type of system is your mysql server running on. Sounds like on a windows box? correct? Do you have a way of testing to see if the mysql server is properly running. Under NT, you should see it in the process task manager.
