Hi,

In my web application, I want to make it such that if an order is placed, the transaction is recorded in my SQL Server database and then an e-mail is automatically sent to the buyer.

My general question is actually: How do I run a program (may be a PHP script) upon changing something in the database?

If you want this to happen from within the database then its the job of a trigger, It depends on your database, check it's documentation, or ask in the forums, your question doesn't apply to the topic of the article.

Anyhow, it very much depends on your database, Most probably however you'll need to have C, Perl or TCL language binding for your database or any other generic language and create the code in that language to send the e-mail, it's best to read the database docs and see its examples.
