Netscape/MySQL Slow...?

Hi,

I have programmed an database driven web-page with some querys in it.

If I test the page with IE (5.5) the connection and process-speed is normal (okay), but If I just call this page out of Netscape (4.75) it takes more than 2 minues until the page will be show. While this process, netscape shows the loading process in the status-bar, than, it seems, that the netscape window freezes for seconds, than continues loading and so on.

why does this happen and how can I avoid taking such a long loading in nn?

Hi there,
NS 4.7X is generally fast enough, but MSIE is often faster....
But such differences i don't have exspected.

Is the output very large ? Older NS have heavy load on rendering many recursive TABLE-Elements.

Then you should limit the output on less database-rows and show it side by side.

There are also incompatibilities with Javascript.

Another possibility is a misconfiguration in the Browser's preferences.
Check the preferences for proxies, local domains ....
Test it by storing the HTML-output of your report in a static HTML-file to your Webserver and load it via HTTP-Link again with the Netscape after clearing the browser-cache (STRG-Reload)

IE only seems faster because it caches whatever it can and renders pages as they come in. :-)

Netscape usually waits for the complete page to come in before displaying it, and if that contains a lot of tables like Ingo says, then it can be quite slow.

Ermm, and sometimes, NS 4.x want to load all pics and external links (e.g. banners from exchanges) until it renders the page!

IMHO NS is the worst Browser @ the moment 🙁
Version 6 is too buggy, 4.7x is too old (css/js)

It seems, that it could really be a rendering problem of netscape.

in the database driven page, there are about 30 or 40 querys and about 30 tables.

I have tested it on a lokal apache-webserver and with the published version on the web.

the page buildup times are the same as befor: IE fast (!) and NN slow (1-2 min).

So it seems that there is no way to optimize it without redesign the structure without tables? Any ideas left= 🙂

I have tested it with NN 6 where the speed is quiet the same of IE.

Hi,
a rendering bottleneck ? Hm.
HTML 4.0 has a syntax for pre-rendering tables while loading. Maybe the may help to speed up older NS rendering.
For example:

browsers have their own ideas about how to implement HTML 🙁

And there is a limit to what you may expect of a browser.
A page with 30 tables.. if you have 20 cells each, you do have 600(!) cells on your page, and each row has to fit the width of the others and... it's a lot of work for a browser 🙂

Oh yes. I can understand it 🙂 The sh..-browser is breaking down occiasonal multiple in a day with getting no useraction. Just for fun...

Unfortunately NS 4.7X is used by up to 30% of the Interner-users (my logfiles say).

For internal purpose i recommend the newest Mozilla from www.mozilla.org. The NS6.0 based on older versions of Mozilla...
but the newest 0.7 is very, very nice...debugged and fast.

www.opera.com is faster, too.

BTW:
30 tables in a query are very many.
Use template-libraries for showing database-results. It makes it easier to alter and edit HTML-Code.

Yes I know - 30 tables are a lot, but this is at least the maximum possible number.

Why so many tables:
The page displays several statistical reports, each kategory boxed in a seperate table with at least only 5 rows and 1 column.

So if it is really a table-problem, I will have to think of an alternativ display.
I don't know much about rendering of the different browsers. So I just was wondering, why it won't work.

Probably you are running better with merging some "logical" tables into one HTML-TABLE tag.

f.e.
Entities Amount March and Amount April, shown in two tables :

<tr><td>130</td></tr>
</table>

<tr><th>april</th></tr>

Operate with "blind" fields such as   f.e.

This could be easier to render for the browser
