When is it appropriate to use mysql_close?

The manual says:
Using mysql_close() isn't usually necessary, as non-persistent open links are automatically closed at the end of the script's execution.

Note: mysql_close() will not close persistent links created by mysql_pconnect().

It is appropriate to use at any point where you want to close a database connection.

It says it's not required because PHP closes the connection on exit, but your car's engine will also stop when it runs out of fuel, that doesn't mean you shouldn't shut it off :-)

Good practice dictates you should allways close what you open, and that includes things that will be closed "anyway" by PHP.
