Autch...compare Oracle with Access?????

Access is for really small, home/personal databases, with about max of 3 simultanus connections and a max of about 10000 entries.

Oracle (expensive) is meant to deal with huge databases, for hundreds of thousands of users and even more entries. It is more stable etc.

And then: Access is only a database, Oracle a DBMS (Management System) with a lot more functionality.

weird question... anyway if you are planning to code a small application access works just fine, but for reals apps you should use Oracle or another real data base manager, note that access is not a real data base manager, and of course it cost much less, that's why you should plan what you want to do, how much money do you have, how much the DB will grow, etc.. Spend 8000$ on oracle for a 200 register DB and your boss will be very angry with you or spend 200$ for a database with 300.000 registers and growing and your boss will be very angry when your system crashes.. so.. take care about your choice.

The best way to compare the two systems is to create a basic database in both and work it out for yourselves. I've been doing just that and though it takes ages it actually makes you understand exactly what the comparisons are. There are too many to list here. Did you want to compare it on a developers perspective or an end users perspective?

Hi ,
If the database size is expected to be about 3-10 million rows, can Access 2000 handle it. I am not doing any front end development. It is only for querying data to answer businesss questions - Single user.
Cab any body point me to a technical spec document that quantifies the performance of Oracle vs Access.

have you considered microsoft date engine...which is based on access 2000 tables but uses a data base managment system to handle indexing and maintain stability. You can lookup more information at msdn.microsoft.com and a do a search for access vs msde
