Insert into specific row

With MySQL is it possible to insert data into a specific row by giving the row number i.e. "2" and would you have to create an empty row first?

if the id row has auto_increment it doesn't seem to like specifying the id on the insert. what i do is insert the data, then update the row in the next query setting the id to whatever is necessary.

Probably not in the way you are thinking. If you have created a unique ID field for identifying your rows then you can insert any number that you want, that isn't already used. But in a straight dump of the data in that table there is no guarantee that the row you insert will show up in the possition that you want. If you order your dump then it will.

There is no such thing as a specific row in any real sql dbms. But say more: what is the effect you are trying to achieve? There's likely some other way to get it just fine using mysql without having to cast it in the mold of file-and-record oriented systems like dbase.
