MS SQL 2000 on Win2000

I'm looking for the best way to connect to the above using Apache 1.3.14 (win32) and php4.

I was thinking about ODBC but with both boxes being Windows based a more native connection seems possible.

I know that there are various functions such as mssql_connect.

Can anyone tell me whether it's a good idea to pursue this avenue? If so, any ideas about testing a connection?

We use MSSQL library for SQL 7 in our company and it performs much faster than ODBC. However, I doubt if the MSSQL library works with SQL 2000.
