MySQL and Red Hat 7.0

I'm having some problems getting MySQL 3.23.35 to work correctly on RH 7.0. I get everything installed ok, but when I try to start the database, I receive the following error: ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/m
ysql.sock' (111). I have checked and the mysql.sock file is present.

Any sites or possible solutions would be helpful. Thanks!

hi,

dont know if you tried it but is mysql daemon running? if not,

cd /etc/rc.d/init.d
./mysqld start

then type mysql and your database should start.

I have this error also and tried to start it up. Got the OK, but i still get the 2002 error. I have a mysql.sock file, but its empty anyway. Any ideas?

when i installed mysql on red hat 7.0 i had the same problem. this is what fixed it for me and i hope it does the same for you. just type these to commands:

shell> chown -R mysql /usr/local/mysql
shell> chgrp -R mysql /usr/local/mysql

now try starting up the mysql server and it should work just fine.

nope... i tried it.. used my directory where it pu mysql /usr/bin/mysql and it still gets the 2002 error.

have you looked in the file:

localhost.localdomain.err

this might give you a more narrow view to the problem.

Apparently the problem is that its looking in the wrong place for host.frm... anyone know how to fix that?

I had this problem too. I think it is because I installed mysql as a superuser (root). Now that is the only way I can access mysql--to login as root.

Yes, I'm a Linux newbie and these things probably seem a bit silly to most of you, but I included this in case it might be the crux of Zach's issue too.

Still no resolution. MySQL is looking for host.frm but isnt finding it. Any ideas?
