access to mysql server

i am working on a red hat 7.0 machine with mysql 3.23.33. i have gone into the mysql database and inserted a new user (chris) into the user database with a password and privileges. now when i try to connect as chris i get this error:

Error: 1045: Access denied for user: 'chris@localhost' (Using password: YES)

using root i can connect just fine. any points in the right direction or something that i am forgetting? any help would be great.

Have you tries reloading MySQL to reflect the updated privileges? It won't happen automagically but has to be forced. To do this:

Login as root on the mysql prompt and do a "FLUSH PRIVILEGES;"

or:

mysqladmin flush-privileges -u root -p

Both have the same effect.
