delete from mysql

I have a table that i am using to kep track of user items,

in the check out process they might want to remove one of these items.

I had a clear all that worked fine but for some reson I can get it to delete with one item.

the two fields that i are important are a user_id and sel_item.

So I am trying to decide if my SQL syntax is way off.

I thought somehitng like

$query = "DELETE FROM table_name
WHERE user_id =\"$user_id\" AND sel_item = \"$sel_item\"";

By the way I am sending the sel_item variable through the browser and the user_id is from a cookie.

Have you checked value of your cookies ? And how is sel_item passed ? via GET or POST ?

try using DROP command instead of DELETE. Delete is to much I think.

Drop is used to remove a table or a database, not to remove items from a table.

My guess is that the where statement is not satisfied.
Try printing the query to the screen and see what it says.

You can rewrite your query like this:

query = "DELETE FROM table_name
WHERE user_id ='$user_id\' AND sel_item = '$sel_item'";

This way you don't need to escape the " (as in \").

i am not trying to actually drop the table just trying to delete a record.

I am passing the variable:

http://whatever.com/remove_itme.php3?sel_item=$something

I thought when PHP gets passed a variable it will create the variable $sel_item

The other thing is I logged into mysql through telnet and was trying to delete that way.

I would

select sel_item from user_track;

so i would then type:
DELETE FROM user_track WHERE
sel_item='B202Q-DC';

It would spit out :
Query ok, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec)

But it wouldnt delete it from the table and I really dont know why not,

I thought this was the proper statement to remove a record but I guess not

The delete statement is perfectly ok, so it must be the "where" part that is bothering mysql.

If you look closely you'll see that the formatting of the mysql output here is all wrong.
The data is aligned to far to the left, there should have been a | to the left of B202Q-DC.

This usually means that what you have in your database is not really B202Q-DC
but something line B202Q-DC\n
or some other combination of data and control characters.
Try printing the length of the string in the fields and compare it to the length of what you think it should be, or print the data using PHP, and print like this:

print ">".$variable."<";

I think you'll find that the "<" character is printed on a new line or something.

Everything prints fine:

">".B202Q-DC."<"

The other thing is that the varible is being passed from a select in the page before.

So I am just wiggin out over this.

Is there a way to say in a delete int eh where clause something like:

sel_item = '$sel_item'*;

That didnt work I was just asking if there is a way similar to that.

Strange... you output is wrong but the data is correct... hmm...
I find that hard to believe, but if you say so.. :-)

Anyway, instead of "where field='$data',
you can use "where field like '%data%'" to do a wildcard search.
That should do the trick

Read the MySQL manual for more info.

Oops, have you tried a mysqldump of your table?
That prints the data in the form of mysql insert statements.
If anything is wrong with your data it should show up there.
