Help! Forgot MySQL ROOT password?

Can someone help me? I forgot my MySQL ROOT password? I don't understand what to do from what the Manual on www.mysql.com say's.

When I try and connect

mysql -uroot -p

I get:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)

That means that MySQL is not even running. If you don't have any databases, try just reinstalling MySQL. If you do have dbs, just back them up and reinstall MySQL.

Uhm.. backup databases without a running database server? :-) Ok, MySQL lets you copy the files, but that's a wordaround.

It should be possible to re-run the install script that creates the initial databases. That will overwrite the user-table, erasing the root password.

rm -rf mysql
/usr/bin/mysql_install_db
