Why is PHP and ODBC so slow?

Can someone tell me why PHP and ODBC is so slow?

Maybe give some fast example code.

I am using Win98SE on a P3 450.

Sambar Server V5.0b1 with PHP 4.04.

ODBC to MS SQL V7 on a 10mb LAN.

Speed is VERY good.

What datasource are you connecting to?

If you are using a Windows system, rather than a *ix, try using the same query in something like MS Query.

I have found the speed a little slow for Access Databases via ODBC, but they DO work.

I am on 100MB ethernet using SQL Server 2000 pulling large data sets.

using the sybase functions it was fast but odbc functions its slow as hell.
