$PATH Problems with apache 1.3.7 and Mac OS X

Installing PHP-4.0.1 on a Mac OS X with Apache 1.3.7 .
After unpacking php-4.0.1.tar.gz, and typing ./configure -withmysql --with-apxs the installation starts, but a few seconds later stops with the message: "configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH ". Does anyone know what $PATH is, or how to set it's value? Thanks!

My guess is that OS X doesn't come with a compiler??! Go get yourself a real OS that comes with development tools, like and kind of Linux, or some kind of BSD.

Well, actually the Mac os X developer tools come with os x and contain all kinds of compilers.. Also, it\'s BSD you\'re running if you are using os x..
