activeperl windows installer issues

hi all,

i decided to go ahead and try installing apache/php/perl/mysql on my windows machine and though exciting i have a strange strange error. when i go to install :

ActivePerl-5.6.0.616-MSWin32-x86-multi-thread.msi

upon trying to install (running file) i am given this exact error :

" This installation package connot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service. "

I have installed all service packs, am running win98 version : 4.10.98

What am I missing? This should NOT be a problem and if it is for me then it must be fore others. Windows Update pretty much says I'm uptodate. This is really odd. It almost leads me to believe I am required to have win2000 but that can't be so IDK.

No, you do not have to have Windows 2000.
If you go back to the following site:

http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/Download.html

and read the paragraph that starts with

Windows Users:

You will see that you need Windows Installer for Windows NT or Windows 95/98. You can download it there.

After you download it and install it, open explorer and double click on the .msi file.
It will autoinstall.
