Installing php-4.0.1pl2 with apache

I downloaded the file php-4.0.1.pl2.tar.gz from www.php.net site

I have redhat linux 6.1 running with apache 1.3.9 web server running which gets installed with redhat linux 6.1 with php3 and mysql working fine.

I followed the installation instructions given in the php manual.

After the installation of php when I try to restart apache using httpd restart, my apache server stops working.
Again I overwrote the httpd.conf and srm.conf files with the old ones(before installing php4) my apache starts working fine with php3 and mysql.

anyone can help on this problem ???

What does the error say in the apache error log?

you can reference one of the posts above, but most likely you need to check the httpd.conf file for proper setup of the php4 module. and you need to check the location that libphp4.so is installed in. redhat 6.1 should use /usr/lib/apache/.

As long as you are upgrading why not upgrade apache as well. 6.2 uses apache 1.3.12.

or:
you should be able to use the php-4.0.1pl2 source rpm from redhat's rawhide directory and recompile a php4 rpm set with 6.1.
