install help please

I have unix server provided by a company called Vservers who do all my web hosting stuff. I already have php3 installed and working, but for some reason i can't run MySQL and imap functions simultaneously. Vservers support told me told install php4 so that it supports both. So, I downloaded php-4.0.2 and followed the install instructions, yet i get errors. I don't any of this apache module stuff, i just want install it with imap and mysql support.

can anyone help me please?

Well I did everything fine in the initial install. However, a script with imap functions gave me a "call to undefined function" error whereas a mysql script did not. How should the ./configure line look? From the documentation, I thought it would look like "./configure --with-mysql --with-imap" What should I do instead?
