"Cannot find header [mysql] files" PHP4.

I have been trying to configure php4.0.2 with MySQL on a RedHat system running 6.2

When I just add the --with-mysql command it seems to work but with a warning that I should compile it with the path to the mysql files. I have tried and tried to do this searching through my system for the "mysql header files" it wants, and pointing it there to no avail. I have added all of the following at one time another to no avail... can someone please help?

/usr/bin/mysql
/usr/lib/mysql
/usr/include/mysql
/usr/share/mysql
/usr/bin

Just a thought, but have you tried just pointing to /usr and letting the build find it?

I have tried to do so to no avail. There is something else going on where the configure script is not finding anything (IMAP, libjpeg, or GD). I read somewhere on the php.net site that there was a bug in the rpms for the linux 2.2.16 kernel where a few symbolic links were left out, I followed the instructions there on bugzilla, but am still having the same problems. No matter what I do, the compile script just keeps telling me that it cannot find the files and or directories....

The jury is still out on this one.. so any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Recompile MySQL from the source and make sure you use the option:
--prefix=/usr/local/mysql

This puts everything in one directory. Then when you run the PHP configure, just use:
--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql
and it all works fine.
