PHP 4.0+ and Apache

Redhat 6.2
MySQL 22.32
PHP 4.0.1,4.0.2, and 4.0.3

PHP4.0.0 run wonderfully on the around 12 machines I maintain. I have been trying to update to a more current release. Everything compiles, the make runs fine, make install works fine... Apache refuses to run with the new module... I get "httpd dead but subsys locked" error... I use the same configure script on all versions... The funny thing is... I did get 4.0.2 to run a new build last week... Works fine... but the MySQL version is the latest beta... 23.25
I have been browsing this forum for months, hoping someone else has had the same problem, and haven't seen anything...
Does anyone have any ideas?

Ok, on a hunch, I installed the latest beta of MySQL and tried recompiling and installing php 4.0.3... guess what... it works.
There seems then to be some issue with running newer versions of PHP against an rpm build of MySQL... Bug?
