Problem Localhost Windows2000

Help 🙂! I've tried to install MySQL (3.22 shareware), Apache 1.3.9.(Win32) and PHP ( on my PC (local).
Apache works, but I can't start http://Localhost/ in my browser (IE5).
MySQL starts, but it seems to close by itself (I monitored the Task Manager in W2000).
I've tried everything! After starting Apache and MySQL, I check http://Localhost and I receive this message:

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to MySQL server on localhost (10061) in connect.php3 on line 4

Info:

C:\Apache\
C:\Apache\mysql
(I have a my.cnf with the path to MySQL in C:)
C:\Apache\php
C:\Apache\phpMyAdmin

the php3.ini and httpd.conf are ok and in place. So ... what's wrong ???

Simple, but can-be-handy questions.
Can you start localhost without bothering about MySQL?
Have you set the ServerName to localhost?
Have you properly installed MySQL (from inside MySQL)?
Can you run MySQL stuff from the commandline?

Make sure you stop the services before you do any major settings to Apache and mySQL, if you're running them as services that is.

The problem is you need to either install mysql as a service or manually run the daemon file "mysqld-nt.exe"

to install as a service...this is in your documentation....

make the env variables set properly
in sysinfo x:\your\mysql\bin

run command.exe

type: NET START MYSQLD-NT
