SMTP & PHP on UNIX

Hello !
I think a similar subject has been posted here before ... but here, it's about UNUX.

I'm using on my APACHE server(FreeBSD) a PHP script to send mails. But
in our LAN, there's no way to generate mails from individual PCs (for
security reasons) so my SendMail cannot be used to send emails from my
forms (it means that I cannot use the standart mail() function built in PHP that works only with SendMail.). So
is there anyway how I can use the SMPT server in oul NETWORK to sand
mails ?
I've set up my SMTP server name in the php.ini file ...but it didn't help...
