Libphp4.so garbled. Apache DSO?

I am getting a error message when starting apache:

API module structure 'php4_module' in file
/usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp4.so is garbled- perhaps this is not an
Apache module DSO??

I just installed apache, php and MySQ: the following way:

Apache:

gunzip -dc apache_x.x.xx.tar.gz | tar xv

cd apache_x.x.xx

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache --enable-module=so

make

make install

/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start (works)

Then MySQL:

gunzip -dc mysql-x.xx.xx.tar.gz | tar xvf -

cd mysql-x.x.xx

configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql

make

make install

scripts/mysql_install_db

/usr/local/bin/safe_mysqld &

Then PHP
#
./configure --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/
apxs

make

make install

cp php.ini-dist /usr/local/apache/conf/php.ini

When I restart apache I get that error. What did I do wrong??

Just do a clean make of PHP "make clean". That should do it. It worked for me at least.

I just tried that, and it didn't work.

Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 228 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
API module structure `php4_module' in file /usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so is garbled - perhaps this is not an Apache module DSO?

Any other ideas?

Well it worked for me. First delete the file libphp4.so and then so this in the source directory of PHP

make clean
./configure --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs
make
make install

This should really do it. U sure u compiled Apache with DSO support?

If anyone has this problem, I figured it out.

I'm running red hat 6.2. In order to get apxs I had to download the rpm for apache-devel. The newest apache-devel was built for red hat 7.0, and it does not work with 6.2.

Instead,I had to go back to the most recent release for 6.2 (look on rpmfind.net, and get the latest for 6.2).

When I rebuilt, I ran

configure
make clean
make
make install

and it worked!

Was having same problem. Your solution of a make clean almost worked. I had to also
remove the config.cache file and because i wasn't using the redhat apache server I had to remove (rpm -e) apache and apache-devel. If you dont remove the apache-devel the apxs stuff wont work with the tar.gz. (which makes sense, i just wasn't thinking)

rpm -e apache
rpm -e apache-devel
make clean
rm config.cache
./configure --with-apxs --with-imap
make
make install

Alternate fix.
Delete everything that looks anything like MySql, Apache and PHP and start over.Try to keep your data and config files. :-)

I'm not making this up. The other fixes suggested didn't work for me but this did. I have been on this since about 8 am and it is now 6:20 EDT

It took about an hour to do the fix, the rest of the time was spent trying the other suggestions and then figuring out what REALLY had to be done. Unless you like reconfiguring Apache, you should probably mv the http.conf file outta the way.

The other fixes probably worked for the other folks. This is what worked for me/ YMMV

make clean worked for me too! yay!!!

now if I can get this PHP to work without serving up blank pages.... grrrr... I've spent HOURS just fixing that before installing PHP and Apache from Scratch....
