Failed to connect ERROR

Help!
On winNT with Php4 running a virtual SMTP server, I kept getting an error saying "Failed to Connect".
The line command is:
'mail($emailTo, $subject, $header,);
How I do to set SMTP on php.ini.
I inserted IP, IP+Port, Address but didn't work

Can you connect to that port using either telnet or an email client?

telnet [ip.ad.dr.ess] [port#]

If the smtp server is on the same box then use telnet localhost [port#]

With an email client you will have to try and send a message.

Telnet is quicker...

I sent a mail using an email client and a external SMTP addres but I would use internal SMTP address. I set this address in IIS with 10.0.0.240 but if I put this in IP php.ini and try to send mail i have the same error
