php as CGI script ?

I am trying to compile PHP as a CGI script, but I am unable to figure out how to make apache use the finished script. M apache is running on a Redhat 7.0, and I compile PHP4 without the --with-apxs= or ----with-apache= options.
The compile og PHP returns no errors, but I dont know what to do next to make the whatever.php files in htdocs use the script.

I am quite new to this, and I would be very gratefull for some help.

Just put your PHP binary in your /usr/local/bin directory (or wherever you keep your local binaries) and put the php scripts in apache's cgi-bin directory
then put this line at the top of each php script:

#!/usr/local/bin/php

Common pitfall, make the php binary readable and executable for whatever user runs apache.

If you have access to Apache conf files. Put the following directives:

ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "/apache-install-dir/cgi-bin/"
Action application/x-httpd-php "/cgi-bin/php"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

Should work too and will avoid the #!/... at the beginning of every script.

Don't forget to put php executable in the cgi-bin directory
