I am interested in making some sort of server-side or client-side script which would let me talk to my users via the web page one-on-one. Almost a page the sysop type funciton.

Any ideas how I could go about this with a reasonable amount of load/effort

Not really. I was on this one site and suddenly a dialog pops up and some guy is asking me if I have any questions and there is a button on all the pages to 'page the sysop' essentially. They used Java, and I'm still thinking thats the best way, but it changed the whole way I looked at browsing web sites- the ability to make it like walking through a store- it makes it really personal.

Oh, ok, I get you. A Java applet is probably the best way to do that but I imagine it could be done in PHP as well. It's really just a web embedded messenging client. I've seen something similar done with embedding Netmeeting into an intranet so that you could talk to the tech support people without picking up the phone. It was quite a success at that particular firm.
