problems with mysql install

day before yesterday i installed red hat 7 workstation on my computer and added the apache server, php4 and mysql 3.23.33

now, i have everything working but mysql. apache runs fine and php is working normally. when i try to connect to mysql, however, i get an error message (111) back concerning mysql.sock and have not been able to resolve it. i have sifted through the manual at mysql.com and also used their search but found very little info on mysql.sock

i also searched the archives here but found nothing that was relevant.

i know that it is a socket and it is what the connection runs through, but my question is what is it supposed to contain. i pulled it up in my text editor and got an error reading the file. any suggestions?

mysql.sock points to a unix socket that mysql listens on.
This file is used for local (localhost to localhost) connections.

The file is assumed to be at the reported location, but that is not nessesarily the location where the file is.
Check your mysql.ini.

Also, this file follows the same accesmode rules as other files, so you can make it read only for root for example, so nobody else than root can use the file, so nobody other than root can connect to mysql.

all right, so i am still having problems connecting but the reason that i get the socket error is because the server isn't running. (smack hand to forehead) so i found the error log and it says it is unable to find the file hosts.frm but when i looked the file was there. so i am unsure as to why it would not find the file. if you have had this problem and could help or know what i am doing wrong your help would be greatly appreciated.

Ahh, just experienced the sort of
trouble you just had.
It was just to change the permissions
on the /var/lib/mysql to the user mysql
safe_mysqld doesn't launch the mysql-
daemon as a root. It uses the mysql uses
to do that. So just
chmod -Rv mysql /var/lib/mysql
