Specifying an external smtp server ...

...for the mail() function to use under *nix

the .ini file has a sendmail_path, but the box that I have php installed on doesn't have sendmail available (or any mail server), and I have to use an external server for it...

Can this be done? The comments say that the SMTP value is for win32 only, or does PHP ignore that?
