Compiling with encryption libs

I compiled mhash and mcrypt to produce the shared object libmcrypt.so. When apache tried to load libphp4.so it attempts to pull in the encryption lib but can not find it. Does anyone know how to specify where libphp4.so looks to pull in other libraries?

Actually I discovered how to do this. In the apache INSTALL file it says to specifiy all libraries that are used in /etc/ld.so.conf
