installing a server

Hi I recently picked up a php book getting all set a sams teach yourself(I will be getting a bigger better book in the future)
and I could'nt pass lesson 2. Why because my computer doesnt know what php is and everyone is telling me oh buy a 600 dollar server and then spend 2 years learning how to fix it.

To cut it short how do I get a server (free) to play my php scripts because really all I want to do is test them.

I have Windows me,
1300 GHZ computer,
a 3 Internet browsers,
one very confuseing php book,

Mark - so download Apache server for windows, and PHP for Windows, and you'll be set :-)

Download Apache. If possible use the latest version, which is 1.13.19. Using an older version is difficult to configure. Version 1.13.19 conigures itself during installation. I have used it on both Win2000 and Win95. W98/ME should not be a problem.

Get PHP from php.weblogs.com. This comes with a very good windows installer which setup php within windows. To get php to work with apache, see the file "install-with-apache" or a similar named file. In essence, four lines have to copied from this file to the httpd.conf file. Restart Apache after inserting the new lines and away you go!!

Sorry to go against the grain but for personal use and being new to it, I'd suggest xitami to get something going fast.

run the install then in xitami.cfg, under [filters] put the line

.php=c:\php4\php.exe

your pages will need to go in

c:\xitami\webpages

and you should be well away...
(even though it says don't modify this file)

Please helpme to install PHP, I has been windows OS, My computer isn't a network. But i don't understand how to install the PWS 4.0. Could you tell me about the others software which match with my windows? Thanks for your answer. I love PHP.

Dave, see Sudhir's message above-- it applies to you as well. You don't need to network, you don't need to use PWS either.
