'www' folder and passwords

Hello,
I have recently installed PHP, mySQL and Apache web server onto my PC. Is there any way I can use the .htaccess and .htpsswd system to protect the 'phpMyAdmin' folder that is created within the 'www' folder?
I am a newbie to PHP, and so there may be a better way around it!

It tells you how to setup .htaccess on Windoze. If you are running Linux they are very similar.
